The Red River crosses into Canada at Emerson, draining across the ancient bed of Lake Aggasiz northward to the great expanse of Lake Winnipeg. For many years I lived on Scotia Street in a house on the banks of this great river. As the quiet, muddy thing rolled by, I often reflected on how the river had, quite literally, come into my home during one of the great floods of the last century.

The river is a symbol of the natural world – broken and beautiful, ailing and powerful, it is bloodline and bathwater to all of us. Rivers are written into the consciousness of everyone who lives near them.  This song celebrates rivers in all their forms and the life that thrives along their banks.
